Sustainable DJ’ing

sweatshopmixer_colorYes, you’ve read that right. The recently concluded Coachella 2010 featured a long list of green initiatives that every event organiser should take a tip from. These included ride sharing, the prerequisite recycling program (which included a free bottle of water for every 10 you turn in) and using solar panels to power LED installations. The most bizarre however, was the Energy FACTory’s Sweatshop Mixer, where aspiring floor fillers could recruit 12 mates to power the decks. That’s right, the turntables run on harvested kinetic energy!

Cardboard Furniture anyone?

Behold! The Radiolarian Sofa by Lazerian Studios from the UK. The sofa, which itself looks like a work of art is made entirely from corrugated cardboard. This is in turn, sourced locally from a factory in Stalybridge that produces paper from recycled pulp.

Food Waste Republic

Food Waste Republic is a final-year project by three journalism students from the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information at Nanyang Technological University. Their task, as they describe, is to go undercover in perhaps the biggest food espionage operation! The 2010 Timberland Eco-Love survey  reveals men Are looking for “Earth-friendly, adventurous females”. Their results?

Picture1• Must Love the Earth: 54% of men would question whether to start a relationship with someone who litters. Others would ponder if a woman was worth dating if she doesn’t recycle (25%), leaves the lights on when not at home (23%) or drives a gas-guzzler (21%).
