1. Australia begins legal action against Japan’s “scientific whaling”

0616-03Australia is making an appeal to the international court of justice to ban Japanese whaling in the Southern Ocean. Japan kills about 1000 whales annually, using a provision in the 1986 moratorium on commercial whaling that allows it to conduct “lethal research” into the mammals. They sell the meat to restaurants and supermarkets (presumably after they’re done with researching). Continue Reading →
