Coffee Machine Designed for Paper Cups Only

September 29th, 2010 | by yiqi

From TreeHugger:

Mr. Lloyd Alter was staying at the Sheraton Hotel while attending a conference, and he “get(s) up early to put together the TreeHugger newsletter and needs (his) coffee,” and in general he would “try to avoid disposable cups”.

To his horror, there were only paper cups in his room. Responsible citizen of the world that he is, he went to borrow a ceramic one from a meeting room. Unfortunately, Mr. Alter’s kind gesture was for naught, as he went back to the room to realise his coffee machine has been redesigned so that there is no carafe, you have to make it in the paper cup!

An example of “design for waste.” Tsk tsk, shame on you Starbucks. And I thought I could trust you guys to always make the right choice.

NEA picks 13 Eco Music Challenge finalists

Untitled1CNA, SINGAPORE: The National Environment Agency (NEA), which kick-started an online song-writing competition in July, has picked 13 finalists.

One of them is 10-year-old Justin Teo, whose original composition “What a Lovely World” got him a spot in the finals.

Justin said he composed the song because he felt mankind should stop harming the Earth with its actions and learn to protect and treasure it.

NEA said the inaugural Eco Music Challenge underscores its ongoing efforts to galvanise everyone to play a part for the environment.

All 13 finalists will go through a three-week mentorship programme with veteran composer and singer-songwriter, Clement Chow.

It will prepare the contestants for the finale concert on October 23, where the winning song will be selected as the official Clean and Green Singapore 2011 song.

The top three winners will walk home with cash prizes of S$5,000, S$3,000 and S$2,000.

Members of the public can find out more about these 13 outstanding finalists at www.nea.ecomusic.sg

Sometimes, Kids Say It Best

Kid’s real cute. Not to mention eloquent. Listen to him denounce marketing, advertising, and expound on the real issue that we are facing with food security. A former NFL wannabe, Mr. Birke Baehr now wants to be an organic farmer. Respect.

Watch, listen, and learn.

Singapore Water Treatment Plant

From our friends at eco-business.com:

“Singapore’s PUB wins two international water awards.

PUB scooped up two international awards – one in recognition of the Marina Barrage and the second for developing a pioneering water treatment plant that is able to collect and treat water flowing in small estuaries such as canals and streams near the sea. “

We at Olive Ventures would like to congratulate PUB. We’ve always had the utmost faith in you. No one can say that the PUB isn’t doing an awesome job.

Cheers!

Open Letter to the Relevant Authorities

I have a new obsession (not saying that I’m giving up my other obsessions) and it’s a pretty one.

Sanitov Cargo Bike

I would like to know, dear authoritative figure, if I am legally allowed to ride this on the road from my house to the neighborhood wet market/basketball court, or from our shop for delivery purposes.

I hope to hear from you soon. Thank you very much for your kind attention.
